Monthly Vs Daily Contact Lenses: Why Dailies Are The Safest Option

/

An increasing number of people are choosing to wear contact lenses as their preferred means of vision correction. But there is a huge selection available online to choose from. It can be hard to know what type of contact lens is best and safest for your eyes. After all - they are medical devices.

So, whether you’re a contact lens newbie or wondering about switching from monthly to daily contact lenses, you’ll want to know for sure that what you’re putting in your eyes is safe, healthy and comfortable. In this article, we’re going to put forward why daily disposable contact lenses are the safest option.

You get a fresh new pair every day

Start each new day with a sterile and fresh pair of contact lenses. There’s no cleaning, no messy solutions, no fuss: just a pristine pair of lenses ready and waiting every morning. When you’re done, you simply remove and dispose of them responsibly in your household waste (not down the drain or toilet).

A new pair every day means your lenses stay fresh and clean, reducing the risk of eye infections.

Re-usable soft contact lenses (such as monthlies) cannot be cleaned effectively. Protein deposits build up and re-usable lens wearers have a significantly higher risk of developing a serious eye infection. Daily disposable contact lenses have been repeatedly shown to be the safest form of contact lens wear.

They keep your eyes healthy

Dailies require minimum care for maximum safety, when compared with monthly contacts. All you need to do to wear daily disposable contact lenses properly is keep your hands scrupulously clean and dry when inserting and removing them.

They’re oh-so-easy to insert, too. Even though they’re ultra-thin, our lenses are always located in the blister pack in the same way. This means they’re never folded, thanks to our innovative INPAC technology. Simply ‘scoop’ them onto the soft tip of your finger for confident handling and easy onto-eye insertion, every time.

Monthly lenses, however, require daily cleaning, soaking and hydrating. All these extra steps can create additional risks for eye infections or health issues such as dryness, redness or irritation to occur. Monthly build-up on lenses can also accumulate, leading to eye health issues.

Or you could drop them in the sink or on the floor, rendering them unwearable. With dailies, you just open a new pair.

They’re so comfy, you’ll hardly know they’re there

It’s not unusual for your eyes to feel tired or dry after 12 hours of wear. However, your eyes get all the oxygen they need with our proven, comfortable contact lens material. You’ll also barely know they’re there due to their superior shape.

Dailies are more breathable

It’s all down to oxygen permeability – how the lens material allows your eye to ‘breathe’. This is measured in Dk units. D (diffusivity) represents how fast oxygen moves through the material. k (solubility) indicates how much oxygen is contained in the material. To calculate the oxygen transmissibility of a contact lens, Dk is divided by t (thickness of the lens material).

daysoft® contact lenses have a Dk of 26. In fact, research shows that a Dk of 20 is sufficient for healthy eyes. Like all leading brands of daily disposable lenses, daysoft® contact lenses exceed this requirement.

Our daily disposables also have our special Soft-Edge technology. This means that, unlike the conventional contact lens shapes that have a bevelled edge, daysoft® lenses have a smooth, continuous edge. This allows your eyelids to glide fluidly over the lenses when wearing them. The fact that they’re 58% water and made of a flexible hydrogel material means they’re super-comfy to wear, as well as keeping your eyes hydrated and fresh.

Monthly contacts nearing the end of their lifespan are simply unable to offer the same comfort, breathability and hydration.

They’re safer and more convenient for people on the go

If you lead an active lifestyle – running, hiking, swimming, working out and playing sports – daily contacts are ideal. Getting sweat, dirt or water in your eye and on your lens isn’t an issue: simply remove and replace. Or maybe you lose a lens while you’re exercising. Again, with dailies, just pop in your spare pair with no stress or hassle.

Perhaps you travel a lot or live life spontaneously. With dailies, you don't have to worry about fastidiously cleaning your lenses or putting them in a case that’s not as clean as it should be. You can throw away your lenses at night and have a pristine new pair ready to wear the next day.

Monthly lenses, on the other hand, can cause issues. Over time, build-up accumulated through exercise or travel can damage them. Meanwhile, losing one of your monthly contacts can be a real headache.

Contact lenses vs disposable: how to choose

We don’t think there’s ever been a better time to wear contact lenses. But one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is whether to choose dailies or monthly lenses. Your eye care practitioner will be able to guide you after a thorough eye examination.

Here’s a quick reminder of the safety benefits of daily contact lenses versus monthly contacts:

Dailies Monthly lenses

  • Fresh pair every day Decline in performance towards end of month
  • Lowest risk of eye infection Daily cleansing may introduce eye health issues
  • Breathable, with Soft-Edge tech. Prone to build-up, reducing comfort.
